Modern seismic design codes (such as ASCE 7, Eurocode 8, and Mexico's NTC) require evaluating diaphragm flexibility by comparing the structural response using a rigid diaphragm and a diaphragm modeled with its actual in-plane stiffness.
For this comparison to be accurate, both models must use the same seismic mass, including structural self-weight, superimposed dead loads, finishes, partitions, permanent equipment, and the required percentage of live load.
Currently, RAM Elements automatically considers structural self-weight, while additional seismic mass must be assigned manually as nodal masses. For medium and large building models, this workflow is impractical, time-consuming, and difficult to maintain whenever gravity loads change.
It would be valuable to provide a more integrated workflow that includes:
User-defined Mass Source from selected load cases or load combinations.
Automatic updating of the seismic mass when gravity loads are modified.
Simplified modeling and comparison of rigid and semi-rigid diaphragms.
Built-in tools to evaluate diaphragm flexibility using floor displacements and in-plane deformations.
These enhancements would significantly improve RAM Elements for complete building seismic analysis, reduce manual modeling effort, and facilitate compliance with international seismic design standards.
