Proposal for Update to Bentley Staad Pro - Connection Design

One of the first options is to have more connection options that reflect real-world cases of beams to tubular columns. Currently, there are very few options for these connections, and the existing ones are not very useful. It would be beneficial to include options such as the following:

Beam to Tubular Column Connections:

  • Include more connection options for fully tubular structures.

  • Allow modeling of plates between the single plate and the column profile in square tubular beam-to-column connections. In practice, this is a common alternative for welded and bolted moment connections.

Specific Connection Modeling:

  • Bracing that reaches the web or flange of the beam, similar to what is shown in the attached image.

  • Beam-to-column moment connections at the column web, where the moment plate can be welded to the beam flange and not at the edge, as currently done.

Head Plate Connections:

  • Currently, head plate connections can only be generated in a specific way. However, when the column is rotated 90° to consider the flanges in the other direction, this connection cannot be created.

  • Include options to model connections with welding between the beam and the plate, improving the versatility and usefulness of these connections.

Additional Requests:

  • Evaluate the implementation of several additional connections in Staad Pro - Connection Design to improve the functionality and adaptability of the software.

Thank you for posting this idea. STAAD.Pro includes the connection design methods included in RAM Connection, so this needs to be addressed in there first, so will move the suggestion to that idea portal.
